When a contractor hands you a material list, it can look like a wall of numbers pulled out of thin air. It isn't — it's built from a handful of straightforward volume calculations that anyone can follow, even without an engineering background. Here's the logic in plain terms.
Every material estimate starts the same way: figure out the volume of what you're building, then work out how much of each material fills that volume. For a wall, that's length × height × thickness. For a concrete slab, it's length × width × thickness. Simple geometry, nothing more.
Here's the part that surprises most people: when you mix cement, sand and water, the finished (wet) volume is actually smaller than the combined dry ingredients you started with, because the fine particles fill the gaps between the coarser ones. To compensate, engineers calculate backwards — multiplying the finished volume you need by a standard factor (1.54 for concrete, 1.33 for plaster) to figure out how much dry material to actually buy.
Once you know your dry volume, splitting it between cement, sand, and (for concrete) aggregate is just proportional math based on your mix ratio. A 1:2:4 concrete mix means for every 1 part cement, you need 2 parts sand and 4 parts aggregate — so each material gets its share of the total dry volume based on those proportions.
Brick counts come from a different volume comparison: the volume of the wall divided by the volume of a single brick plus its mortar joint. That "plus the mortar joint" detail matters — skip it, and your brick count comes out noticeably higher than what you'll actually need, because you haven't accounted for the mortar occupying part of that space.
